Steve

November 11, 2008

The day that Steve came and sat on the couch had not been a great day for us. We had difficulty getting started that day in Balboa Park, San Diego, and the day was quite hot. To make matters worse, most of the passers-by didn’t seem interested in sitting and sharing a story, so our “people wranglers” (our daughters and friends who work to rope people into talking with us) were feeling a bit defeated, too. Then came Steve…a handsome, middle-aged police officer who sat down and when asked to share a story about a defining moment in his life, knew immediately the story he wanted to tell. His storytelling was so clear, vivid, and compelling. We all felt like we were there with him when he heard the sad news about his father. The crew was speechless and most of us were crying. Okay, truth be told, we were ALL crying. We knew that no matter what happened for the rest of the day, the story we had just heard would be with us forever.

Steve recounts the story of getting word as a
young boy that his father, a marine hero fighting
in Vietnam was likely going to die after being
shot several times.

“…You knew what that meant…someone died…”
